I first met Blodwell while presenting my clothing collections in Hollywood during the Golden Globes in 2011. He greeted me with a broad smile and his dulcet British accent. We’ve since crossed paths many times at Hollywood events, including at a VIP party on the rooftop of The Beverly Hilton during this year’s Oscars week. I enjoyed catching up with Blodwell over the phone recently. LDM: When did you decide this was the career for you?

GB: I grew up in Scotland. My first job was at a men’s tailor shop where I spent all my money getting suits made for myself. Then I was a hippy and went on the road and did all these wonderful things. I lived a very beautiful life, but I wanted to get back into the world so I moved to London. I had a pair of corduroy pleated pants by a company called Browns. They were stylish pants. I don’t know how I acquired them because I was basically a monk. I was walking down the street and I saw the store called Browns and I thought, “This must be where my pants are from!” I walked in and discovered it was the finest store in London, selling Armani, Cerruti, Miyaki… It was the premier store in England. I was blown away trying on all of the clothes and the next thing I know, the owner of the store approached me and offered me a job!

LDM: How did you transition into styling celebrities? GB: I knew George Harrison’s wife and I phoned her up and told her she must have him try this stuff on, that he would go crazy. So I packed up a trunk and took it to George Harrison’s house. I brought him mostly Giorgio Armani and he bought almost everything. He became my personal client. A short time later, Bob Dylan came to town and Rod Stewart as well. Before long, I decided to move to L.A. I was able to secure a job at the premier store on the west coast, which was called Maxfield. It was a tiny store and all the stars would come in. Working with these incredibly well designed clothes with great fabrics and trying them on different people, I honed my skill. LDM: You’ve styled many stars, including Helen Mirren, Drew Barrymore, Sophia Milos, Eva LaRue and Elton John. Are you able to name a favourite client?

GB: One day I returned to the store and Leonard Cohen was standing right there. I told my workmates, “You can have all of my other clients, but this one is mine!” And so he became my client. He would arrive early in the morning and sing songs to me while I made his selections. LDM: You have styled shoots for numerous magazines, including Detour, Ebony, Movieline, Estylo, Entertainment and many more. How did this element of your career evolve? GB: It was after I began working on Rodeo Drive. I met the Italian designers who would bring me their work and the next thing I know I’m in Milan as the editor-atlarge for Italian Harper’s Bazaar. All of these Italians were staring at me wondering, “Who is this man?” I was dressed pretty outrageously on that particular day and I guess it caught their interest. They invited me to my first ever high-end fashion show on the Spanish Steps in Rome, which was Valentino. They asked me to tell them what

STYLE

I liked and my selections were published in the magazine. LDM: In every success story there is an element of timing and luck, however, you seem to exude an energy that draws people to want to embrace you and present you with opportunities. GB: It seems to happen like that. I am very lucky that I have a lot of love in my heart. I mean no harm to anyone. I truly have love and empathy for every human being. I am happy when others are happy. Lisa Drader-Murphy is a Canadian fashion designer. from reputable brands, Revolution Boutique has continually evolved since opening its doors in 2011, says owner Brad Leyden. From feedback and first-hand experience on the floor, the team at Revolution take on their

clients’ sentiments in an effort to be the local women’s clothing boutique that truly allows a fun and exciting shopping experience for each and every customer. “Our staff is just amazing,” says Leyden, noting the friendly atmosphere with quality brands at moderate price points that appeals to women of just about any age.

Whether you’re looking for a bright and flowy summer dress or new leggings and a tunic for classic everyday wear, Revolution Boutique has you covered. Tops, dresses, denim and staples, such as the basic white T-shirt or a shimmery top for a night out all line the shelves and racks, with new product arriving on a weekly basis from all around the world.

Desigual, a Spanish clothing line known for its use of bright colours, innovative patterns and cuts, offers fashion-forward statement pieces for the woman who likes to stand out in a crowd –available exclusively in Alberta at Revolution Boutique. Italian line Cocco Bella offers feminine, fresh and flirty styles in silk, linen, cashmere and other all-natural fibers, creating an elegant yet whimsical look. Because it offers something for every woman, it’s a brand that’s proving very popular here in Sherwood Park, Leyden says. “Right now, I would say Cocco Bella is our hottest line. We can hardly keep it on the shelves,” he says, adding that Canadian brands like Papillon and Tribal are also customer favourites because of the versatile options from tops to tunics. “It’s all about offering good quality clothing and great styles at affordable price points, right here in Sherwood Park.” Adding to their collection of women’s fashions, Revolution Boutique recently

expanded to include the one thing many believe can make or break any outfit: shoes. With brands like Fly London (UK), Mjus (Italy) and CC Resorts (Australia), clients can now dress head-to-toe under one roof, Leyden says. “It’s a really great addition to the store. Having shoes means we’re now able to give our customers even more of what they’re looking for,” says Leyden, whose passion for growing and improving his store may soon lead to another Revolution Boutique opening soon.

“I’m absolutely loving what’s happening here. It’s been an incredible ride and one I look forward to continuing.” Revolution Boutique #24 – 975 Broadmoor Blvd. Sherwood Park 780.449.4648 www.revolutionboutique.ca

Asanas to Remember: An Intro to

ASHTANGA YOGA By Courtney Tait

N

amed for the eight limbs of yoga as described in the ancient text Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Ashtanga Yoga offers a modern version of classical Indian yoga and is one of the most popular styles practiced in the Western world today. Developed by Indian yoga teacher K. Pattabhi Jois, who opened the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India in 1948, Ashtanga emphasizes synchronizing each asana (physical posture) with the breath, creating an internal heat that is believed to purify the body. So what can you expect from an Ashtanga class? Continual movement and sweat, as well as deep, focused breathing — Ashtanga is a vigorous practice. But what sets it apart from other forms of yoga is the repetition. While most yoga styles feature variation in which postures are practised and what order

10

FineLifestyles

EDMONTON

they are practised in, an Ashtanga session consists of the same set of opening, backbending and finishing sequences each time, along with one of six series that range in difficulty from beginner to advanced. While teachers typically guide the class, students are encouraged to learn and remember the postures and the sequence in which to do them, making Ashtanga more disciplined than some other forms of yoga. For many students, repetition makes the practice easier to do on their own, as once you have learned the series and sequences, you simply step onto your mat and begin. In a yoga tradition that emphasizes daily practice, having the asanas memorized increases the likelihood that you will not only start, but complete an entire session, enjoying the increased strength, flexibility and mental focus yoga provides.

Sleep and Your Health – Are You Getting Enough?

By Lisa Clements, ND Vital Health Naturopathic Clinic #136 – 2755 Broadmoor Blvd. Sherwood Park 780.449.4047 www.vitalhealthclinic.ca

S

WHY SLEEP? leep is necessary for survival. On average, an individual requires seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Sleep is needed for restoration and repair and plays a vital role in strengthening our immune responses, promoting tissue growth and healing. The brain is better able to consolidate newly acquired information after high quality sleep. Further, it is clear our ability to function in daily life is optimized when we harness the power of quality sleep in the right dosage. Poor sleep can be caused by many different factors and can impact the body in many different ways. The following

12

FineLifestyles

EDMONTON

article explains some of the common causes for poor sleep, as well as some of the many consequences inadequate sleep can have on the body. CAUSE – NERVOUS SYSTEM IMBALANCE: There are two components to the nervous system: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. Our bodies need to be in parasympathetic mode to properly digest food, to heal and to sleep. If the body has experienced a high level of stress or long periods of continual stress, the nervous system can become “stuck” in sympathetic mode making it difficult to fall and stay asleep. CAUSE – HORMONE IMBALANCE: Hormones are chemical messengers in the body; they allow the different systems and organs to communicate with each other. If hormones are out of balance, they may be sending the wrong signals at the wrong times and preventing you from sleeping properly. CAUSE – LIFESTYLE: Lifestyle can dramatically impact the way we sleep. For example, shiftwork, overworking or jet lag can interrupt normal circadian rhythms which regulate the sleep-wake cycle. In addition, screens, such as TVs or cell phones, emit blue light, which turns off sleep signalling. CONSEQUENCE – WEIGHT GAIN Without enough sleep we lack the energy we need throughout the day. Our bodies know sugary foods will give us quick

HEALTH & WELLNESS

energy, which causes us to crave them. After eating, our blood sugar spikes and insulin follows. Blood sugar then drops and we find ourselves craving sugar once more. In addition to blood sugar balance, weight is affected by leptin, an appetite-suppressing hormone, and ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone. Lacking sleep, the body decreases leptin production and increases ghrelin production, thereby contributing to weight gain. CONSEQUENCE – ANXIETY/DEPRESSION Sleep deprivation stimulates areas of the brain that process emotions. This same pattern of brain activity occurs in people with anxiety disorders. Research suggests a strong connection exists between poor sleep and mood disorders. CONSEQUENCE – POOR MEMORY Imagine your brain as a large filing cabinet with the important filing happening during sleep. In the office, if documents aren’t filed properly and with consistency, they can be hard to find again once they’ve been filed away. Similarly in the brain, with lack of sleep, memories don’t get filed properly; therefore, retrieving them at a later time can be difficult. Getting enough quality sleep is extremely important for overall health. If you are having difficulty falling or staying asleep or you feel as though you have health concerns that may be related to your sleep, see a qualified health provider to help you determine the cause and find a treatment option to help you.

ate August is the perfect time to indulge your senses in the vibrant sights and smells associated with fall. It’s also an ideal time of year to dine outdoors. In this issue we’ve partnered Alberta meats and California wines for an amazing dining experience. Open your windows and a new bottle of wine as we welcome autumn. Like many favourite classic cocktails, barbecue has been reinvented in the past few years by celebrity chefs worldwide. So why not spend the last few weeks of summer enjoying savoury grilled meats paired with amazing American wines? Toss some Alberta beef ribs on the grill and open a sinful Zinfandel, or uncork a bold full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon alongside a New York steak for a classic outdoor dinner. No matter what you are in the mood for, California wine and locally raised beef will satisfy everything you have been longing for.

Mouthwatering Alberta beef comes from the segment of the Canadian cattle raised in wide open pastures, spectacular grassy environments and favourable conditions, creating cuts of meat renowned for their incredible flavour.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Conversely, California’s sunny state has been equally strong in winemaking with plenty of developments in the past 246 years; California wines produced from 2012 through 2014 are exceptional and worth every penny.

August is the perfect month for local veggies and fresh herbs. Open a bottle of Mer Soleil Silver Chardonnay alongside local veal chops for a fresh, crisp and un-oaked Chardonnay with tangerine, Meyer lemon and bright acidity.

A notable vineyard is the Wagner Family of Wines (WFW). Pioneers in Napa Valley, they’ve been producing vintages since 1915 and have yielded some of California’s top wines, including Caymus, Mer Soleil, Conundrum, Belle Glos and Meiomi. Representing quality and finesse, they showcase the pure and distinct fruits that makes California wines more than dreamy.

Or try a soft and velvety Merlot delivering plum, blackberry, cherry and baking spices found in California’s first biodynamic — the highest level of organic farming — winery, Benziger. Sip a Liberty School Syrah with juicy and jammy fruits showcasing cherry, blueberry and black pepper spice. Finally, Gnarly Head Zinfandel is a big, rich red wine with black fruits sure to hold its own at your next dinner on the deck with everything served saucy! Gourmet bison sausages, bacon wrapped burgers or even a rib steak all taste better with a great wine.

Our suggestions for a perfect night of Alberta food and some of California’s best producers are as follows: To start, shine with a sparkling wine. Mumm Napa Brut Prestige delivers elegant mousse with vanilla, citrus and melon. Pair with Red Deer-based Sylvan Star Cheese, particularly the Grizzly Gouda. Follow happy hour with a main course made from Alberta finds.

Whether you’re unwinding or chasing sunsets, supporting local farmers or growing your own fields, barbecue and California wines offer a mouthwatering marriage for reflecting on summer days spent outdoors. Cheers!

Whisky: Peated versus Un-Peated

W

hen talking whisky, have you ever heard someone exclaim, “Ooh … I don’t like the peated stuff?” As a whisky retailer I’ve heard it often. And yet, there is a dedicated group of whisky drinkers out there who just cannot get enough of it. But exactly what is “peated” whisky? How, and more importantly, why do companies try to infuse that earthy flavour?

Graham Usher Owner and Whisky Lover UnWined: Fine Wines, Spirits & Ales 203 Edmonton City Centre, Edmonton 780.421.0015 #2 512 St. Albert Trail, St. Albert 780.458.4777 info@unwined.biz unwined.biz

EDMONTON

First and foremost, whisky is the result of a desire to make uisge breatha — the water of life — in an area of the world that traditionally had scarce fuel resources. Peated whisky is really a testament to the ingenuity of the Scottish people looking to find a solution. So, how does whisky become infused with that peaty, smoky flavour? To create single malt whisky you require only three ingredients: water, yeast and malted barley. “What is malted barley and why is it needed?” you might be wondering. Malted barley is used for two reasons: barley was and is a plentiful grain in Scotland; and, once malted, the kernels contain large stores of maltose sugars. When sugar is combined with yeast, the two byproducts produced are alcohol and carbon dioxide. So that explains why they use malted barley but that doesn’t explain what is malted barley? Malted barley is barley that began and then ceased the germination process. To accomplish this, you must “trick” the barley into converting its stored starches into maltose sugars, all in preparation for an anticipated growth spurt.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

HERE’S HOW IT’S DONE. Barley is first spread onto a large, concrete malting floor to a depth of roughly 10 cm. The barley is then wetted down and left to absorb the water. After four hours, the entire floor is turned over and wetted again. This process is repeated at regular four hour intervals until it is determined that the conversion of starch to sugar has reached its peak — usually three to four days. At that point, germination must be stopped before the barley starts using its sugar stores. The most effective way to stop germination is to heat the barley. This is where peat is introduced. Prior to the introduction of electricity and natural gas in Scotland, one of the most common fuel sources for heat was dried blocks of peat. In the distilling world, fires fueled by peat were lit under the malting floors to stop germination. Along with heat, peat fires tend to produce large amounts of thick, rich smoke that is trapped for 24 to 36 hours in the malt drying rooms. The smoke infuses into the barley, giving it that distinctive aroma and flavour. Malt men know how long to dry the barley infusing peat to achieve the desired flavor, which is measured in ppm or phenol parts per million. Currently, there are whiskies that register anywhere from 0ppm - 258ppm. Conversely, to eliminate the ‘peaty’ character, hot air is used to stop germination, allowing whisky drinkers around the world to choose their style of whisky. What’ll it be, with peat or without?

SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

Majestic, mysterious and totally awe inspiring, this ancient site still beguiles our sense of reality. Floating high in the Peruvian Andes, this centre of energy has been reported to revive tired souls and foster dreams for those who make the journey.

Getting to Machu Picchu can be accomplished in a number of ways. Planning the excursion on your own or with a private tour company are other options, however selecting a pre-tour is the most popular choice made by cruisers with Oceania.

D

esignated by UNESCO as one of the new seven natural wonders of the world, an excursion to Machu Picchu requires preparation and is not recommended for persons with mobility issues. Some 3,000 stone steps of varying heights link more than 150 buildings from temples to plazas, residences and terraces over an impressive five acre site. Expect to spend a great deal of time walking and gawking. Machu Picchu was built at the height of the Inca Empire during the 15th and 16th centuries, but was inhabited, scholars suggest, for only about 100 years. Diseases brought to the New World by conquistadors is often blamed as the culprit for the demise of the inhabitants.

Your excursion will take you high into the Andes, involve overnight stays, local food, water and (of course) visiting the site before having to return to the cruise port. The ship sails when the ship sails, so if your self-planned tour has a problem, or the train is not on time, or heaven forbid there is nasty weather, you’re stuck. When travelling with a ship’s excursion all of these issues are taken into consideration and mitigated by the cruise line. Machu Picchu appears on South American itineraries as well those coming from the South Pacific via Easter Island. Our last itinerary with Oceania, aboard Regatta, the delightful “R” class medium sized, luxury ship, offered pre-cruise excursions as we sailed from Miami to Lima. The reverse of this schedule allows for a post-cruise excursion. Regatta shone with its typical elegance, but since a refurbishment in the summer

SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

of 2014 she has even more sparkle. Smiling faces are the norm for crew and even hugs from attendants and staff whom we have come to be very fond of over the years. “The kids” — as we affectionately call many of our favourite crew — go to no end to ensure that our special menu is prepared or our five o’clock cocktail, just the way we like, it is promptly shaken or stirred. The first few days are usually spent with other passengers sharing stories, photos and experiences of being high in the Andes. We particularly like the library with its “English club-like” atmosphere and a super collection of reading material. Canyon Ranch Spa is heaven! This last itinerary was over 40 days so hair required cutting, nails needed attention and so on. Do not miss an opportunity to be pampered in the spa … perhaps after your excursion to Machu Picchu. As always I am looking forward to seeing you aboard one of Oceania’s cruises. I’ll be the one with a grin from ear to ear. When you hear the name “Tiffany’s,” chances are you think of the worldrenowned jeweler Tiffany & Co., known for its luxurious high-quality pieces. For Mel Simmons, it became the naming inspiration for Tiffurny’s, a boutique she opened in June of this year that features fine-living products for your pets and home. “All our products have been thoroughly researched by us and our pets; we only brought in things we believe in,” says Simmons. “We focus on quality and unique products while keeping locally-made in mind.”

A

s a pet owner with a background in real estate, Simmons had been seeking items that would be beneficial to her pets, yet also enhance the decor of her home. “Pet products are often not as stylish as they could be,” she says. “Pets have a tendency to love using our own furniture, therefore why not give them something beautiful and useful. Some items can be custom designed and built to fit nicely into your home and vehicle.” Simmons took inspiration from the best North American pet boutiques and created Tiffurny’s, a boutique-style store with white walls, lime green accents and clean, organized displays. Tiffurny’s reflects a modern approach to pet care, where pets can be treated to the best quality made products. “Pets are members of our family

and we believe they deserve the best of the best,” says Simmons. The staff is friendly, welcoming and highly knowledgeable about every product they sell. “We have very unique products and we are all about service,” says Tiffurny’s manager Nakiya Ingraham. “Everything in the store has been tested on our own pets and the products have been sourced both locally and worldwide. We enjoy helping people find a product that works for them and their pets.” For feline-loving clients, Tiffurny’s features Vesper V-line cat furniture with cubes, platforms and tunnels with removable, machine-washable inserts. Unlike clunky cat towers, which are an eyesore in the home, these cat trees are stylish, practical and carpet-free. Scratching poles are

strategically placed and covered in twine and other cat-loving materials for an attractive aesthetic. “People love that the products are functional while still fitting well with home decor,” says Ingraham. “They are cool, stylish pieces.” Clients can choose from ready-made furniture or order a custom cat tree, tailoring the size, colours and texture to suit their living space. While researching products, Simmons and Ingraham learned there was a lack of quality, safe travel gear for pets. They discovered Sleepypod™ pet beds and carriers, car harnesses and travel accessories, which makes travelling with your pets easier, safer and more stylish. The custom option is helpful for people with various breeds, as finding a properly-fitting collar can be a challenge. Paracord collars and leashes also feature two styles of custom options in whatever colours you wish. Tiffurny’s also features a line of small dog and cat collars made of Ultra suede (the same Ultra suede used in Lamborghini, Mercedes Benz and Aston Martin show cars) with Swarovski crystals featured in many of the pieces. This line is handmade from Susan Lanci, USA. These product lines are exclusive to Tiffurny’s.

Tiffurny’s also features products for pets with special dietary needs including treats by 4 Paws Pure, a Prince George, B.C. business that specializes in allnatural treats. While many foods on the market mix ingredients, making it difficult to feed pets with food allergies, 4 Paws Pure makes grain-free, single-ingredient treats. Made by hand without additives or preservatives, they come in a variety of flavours including wild and exotic game such as kangaroo, emu and camel as well beef, elk, duck and yam chews. “They are amazing treats for dogs and cats, especially if you have dietary concerns,” says Ingraham. “We can’t keep them on the shelf.” Also available is Open Farm dog food, which is ethically raised and sourced. The company uses local ingredients from animals that were raised cage free with vegetarian-based diets, and the food is all grain free. The bags are also recyclable. Open Farm is owned by a Canadian family, but produced in the U.S. “It’s an amazing product that makes pets and their owners happy,” says Simmons. Peggy Reid, owner of Reid & Siemonsen Design Group, says the main thing is to never eyeball and nail. “It’s worth measuring the piece and doing the math to get it right,” she says. “Once you hang it, it will be there for a period of time and it’s worth it to take your time and do it right.” Tracing the frames you plan to use on plain paper and then taping them to the wall is a great way to get a good visual of your layout before you make any holes. Statement PieceS From five-bynine-foot black-and-white photos to full wall murals, rooms sporting large-scale art prove that bigger is often better. If you’re attracted to a large art piece, but are worried about it taking over your room, consider the following. One of the most ideal places for a large work of fine art photography is an open, airy room packed with architectural interest. A single piece of art can strike the perfect balance between the architectural assets and personal contents of a space. If you really want to make a statement with non-representational art, go gigantic. Not only will it be much easier to take notice of the piece but it will also help you define an area or draw people from one space into another.

A

rt can be playful, relaxing or inspiring for its viewers. It can add warmth, make you laugh, whet your appetite or bring tranquility to a room. Deciding on the feeling you want to evoke in your home, and in each particular room, will help you choose the right artwork for your space. Whatever you do, make sure you surround yourself with pieces you love. Salon Style Gallery WallS Gallery walls are a popular option and there are as many ways to do them as there are pieces of art. Galleries of family photos, dog portraits, works by the Masters, album covers, maps, abstracts, botanical prints and collections of just

about anything can be hung this way. You can also mix all these items and more in one gallery wall. It will depend completely on the aesthetic you are working towards. Something to remember about salon style galleries is that the real focus is on the overall composition of the wall, not on the individual images themselves. This usually means starting with the largest piece in the centre and placing other pieces around it. Keeping the composition visually balanced is key. Some designers prefer using frames of the same size, frames of one colour or mats that are the same colour and width to unify the gallery. Others insist the distance between the frames be equal on all sides.

HOUSE & HOME

For those who really don’t like a lot of busyness in a room, oversized graphic art may be perfect. By pairing it with just a few key items, the art truly gets to be the star and the overall space will not be overwhelming. Reid says mural or oversized pieces can have quite an impact and create a lot of interest, but they have to be treated individually. “They’re site specific,” she says. “But they have to have enough space around them so they don’t look like they’re crowded in.” There’s a lot of talent out there, and some of it may be yours. Check out DIY tutorials on Pinterest and consider making some of your own art. Inspiration for shadow boxes, collages, paintings and turning vintage paint-by-number kits into statement pieces are just a few ideas to get you started.

azing out at one of the masterpiece backyard designs we’re becoming accustomed to, it’s hard to believe in the not-so-distant past, a stained cedar deck and off-the-shelf patio set felt sufficient for any home. Today’s fine homes extend into the backyard, creating seamless indoor-outdoor spaces that can function as both relaxing, private havens and jawdropping entertaining spaces. Outdoor kitchens, built of stone and granite that

State-of-the-art grills, wood fired pizza ovens, sinks and bars are some of the artisanal, gourmet possibilities for these highly customizable cooking centres. High-end patio furniture presents an exciting synthesis of natural inspiration and urban style. Weatherproof construction and outdoor fabrics bring the comfort and functionality of your living and dining rooms to your backyard, allowing you to recreate the livability of those spaces alfresco. Relaxed sectionals, banquette seating and stylish bar stools create natural gathering spaces for guests. Lighting integrated into the cooking space and entwined with landscaping unifies your backyard’s elements in a way that is sure to take your guests’ breath away. In our unpredictable climate, one of the most important challenges is creating an outdoor space that can be enjoyed year round, by homeowners and their guests alike. Extending a deck’s roof into the architecture of the home enhances continuity from indoor to outdoor, while providing protection from the elements. Composite decking is incredibly durable and ageless, with only the simplest cleanup required to maintain the warm glow of wood. We prefer the Trex Transcend line, a green product that

carries the look of exotic hardwood outdoors. Outdoor heaters are a necessity for outdoor living spaces in Edmonton; fortunately, their design has gone from utilitarian to sculptural in a matter of a few years. Heat and ambiance can also come from an outdoor gas fireplace — or, as you’ll see in our Augusta homes, a see-through fireplace that can be enjoyed both inside your great room and outside on your deck. Maximizing drama and style while minimizing upkeep is a common theme in today’s outdoor spaces, carrying through to the very landscaping of your luxury backyard oasis. Faux grass is the uncontested preference in high-end homes; a year-round, maintenance-free lush green lawn is hard to argue, especially when it incorporates a personal putting green. Landscaping overall is moving in a water-friendly direction, with today’s tastes favouring stone arrangements in the garden and live plants as accents only. Poured concrete edging and pathways offer endless finishing possibilities to complement the exterior of your home. A well-designed backyard is sure to enhance any homeowner’s enjoyment of their space. With the right combination of natural elegance, innovative materials and of course, the requisite tech, you could be enjoying a year-round staycation in your own backyard.

Chatting WITH THE

ONE BILLION DOLLAR MAN By Tobie Hainstock

I

t all started with 112 avocado green electric can openers. In 1977, Bob Circosta was a talkshow host for an AM radio station when he was approached by the station manager with a situation... a client had paid the station in product. “When the manager asked me to go on-air and sell these can openers for them I thought he was crazy,” he chuckles. To Circosta’s surprise all the can openers sold that day. “I was in total disbelief,” he recalls. “I’m not sure what it was that did the trick, possibly because I had some credibility to my audience as a newsperson.” That was 37 years ago and the home shopping experience has far surpassed many expectations. LIFE’S A PITCH! As a home shopping guru, Circosta has had plenty of experience with sales and marketing over the decades. This has inspired him to write his book Life’s a Pitch, which outlines numerous key elements to successful sales and marketing. Over the years, many have encouraged Circosta to write a book about his work with various celebrities and high profile people. “Rather than doing something like that, I looked at writing something that would help people. I wanted to write something readers could refer to as a resource manual.” He adds that he purposely wrote a book that was not about him, but rather about assisting seasoned business owners and entrepreneurs. SELLING OR SERVING? So, how do you become successful at selling? According to Circosta, the key is not to sell a product. “Take a step back, look at the product and ask yourself, ‘how is this going to help others?’ ” He encourages business owners to advise their staff that they are not selling, they are serving. “Don’t sell,” he advises, “Serve. Help every customer achieve their goal.” Talk about the product and how it can benefit your customer. For example, if you own a shoe store, what you are really selling is style and comfort. Focus on the end result. If you buy these shoes, they will look great and be so comfortable your feet won’t hurt at the end of the day. “This is not a

gimmick, it’s built on complete honesty,” he adds. Being dishonest will only discredit you and you won’t receive a strong repeat clientele. HEALTHY COMPETITION Circosta notes that when it comes to keeping the competition on their toes, customer service is the key. People purchase from a comfort level. Don’t sell to your customers; provide a service and go to great lengths to serve with excellence. Develop relationships with your clientele and they will be loyal to you. Follow that rule of thumb and you won’t have to worry about being competitive. PUTTING WORDS INTO ACTION In conclusion, Circosta says the onus is really on the business owner. If he/she wants a truly successful business, it’s ultimately up to him/her. “I can share technique, but it’s up to you to take action. Gather the information and apply it. If you do it wrong, that’s okay. Everybody fails at something. You’ve just got to do it yourself to succeed.”

ince 1985, Edmonton’s Westlawn Funeral Home has been helping families through the most emotional times of their lives — the loss of a loved one. Manager Andrew Earle and the Westlawn staff work every day to ease the burden facing their clients as they prepare to say goodbye to a beloved friend or family member. “We know the passing of someone is an often stressful and trying time,” says Andrew. “So, we provide everyone we serve with a personal and compassionate experience as we guide them through the process of honouring someone,” says Andrew. Because each of our loved ones is unique and special to us, Westlawn knows celebrating a life is a truly personal experience. “The way one pays tribute to someone is different for every person,” says Andrew. “There is no onesize-fits-all experience, and that’s where we come in. We make sure every family creates the memorial or funeral that is a true reflection of the person they are celebrating.” The Westlawn staff members have diverse backgrounds and experiences, ensuring their ability to handle every detail of the memorials and funerals they plan. This takes the burden off those dealing with the loss, so they can grieve without any additional stress. “We serve all faiths and cultures, so no matter your needs we can meet them,” says Andrew. There are an infinite number of ways to memorialize a life, from the comfortingly traditional to the wildly inventive. No other funeral home and cemetery can match Westlawn’s breadth of services. The company has created a culture devoted to creating the best possible experience for families. They also have the facilities and grounds to make those unique and memorable experiences happen. Send-offs tributes can include simple insights shared by families, which often have an incredible and long-lasting impact for everyone attending. It can be as simple as sharing of a coveted secret recipe or having on hand a favourite candy. “We have been privileged to share in many wonderful and unique services,” says Andrew. “We conducted a service where we tied a ‘secret’ recipe to a wooden spoon. The son of the deceased stood up and presented it to everyone at the reception. When he mentioned his only request was that each person be inspired to share a special memory of his mother, wherever they were and with whomever they were with. There wasn’t a dry eye. It was a joyful moment. You could see everyone instantly knew the memory they were going to share. It was wonderful to be part of a family’s experience they’ll never forget.” Not only does Westlawn offer personalized options for funerals and

For those looking to make plans ahead of time, Westlawn offers excellent preplanning services, which are becoming more and more common as people learn about how to take care their final arrangements. Like a will, pre-planning removes a great deal of the stress when a loved one dies. Plus, pre-planning takes care of most, if not all, of the costs associated with loss. “Choosing to make final arrangements in advance helps ease the burden on loved ones,” says Andrew. “With costs covered, this also helps close friends or family members who are left to take care of the estate.”

Westlawn offers fingerprint jewellery and the ability to create a real diamond from a loved one’s cremated remains. When it comes to planning, final arrangements often involve more than just a funeral or memorial service; families must also choose a resting place. Westlawn has its own traditional burial gardens, with beautiful features and ornamentation, including in-ground bronze memorials and upright granite monuments. There are also options in their columbarium, with aboveground niches and an indoor glass-front columbarium niches for comfortable year-round visitation. “We have burial spaces, outdoor niches and a heated and air conditioned indoor space — all wonderful choices for a resting place,” says Andrew. “Our indoor space has glass walls where families are invited to have visible mementos with their loved one.” Westlawn also has memorial benches, trees and nature walk options available. Whether you’re looking for something traditional in the cemetery or something tailored to your loved one, Westlawn can accommodate your needs.

Clients can make decisions on where their final resting place should be and what type of service they would want. “Many families have described it as a gift left for them, demonstrating a caring person is still looking out for them,” says Andrew. Westlawn offers payment options to suit any budget, and arrangements are transferrable to any Arbor Memorial location across Canada. Arbor Memorial has been serving the Edmonton area for more than 60 years, and Westlawn Funeral Home & Cemetery has earned its reputation as the city’s choice for compassionate, professional funeral and cremation services. This amazing feat was achieved by using high strength steel and aluminum, now 41 per cent of the vehicle’s body. The redesign also means the vehicle is shorter and more narrow, but offers more interior space. Thanks to a lighter body

PUBLISHER’S CHOICE

What Makes a Business the Best?

S

eeking out the city’s ‘Best of the Best’ is a task we take seriously at Fine Lifestyles. With so much competition in the marketplace — and consumers researching their options more than ever — businesses must continually innovate to stay at the top of their game. Here are three key practices that make a company stand out from the pack. 1. THEY PRIORITIZE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE In the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us an opportunity to do so.” The best businesses listen to clients’ needs, exceed their expectations, address their concerns, and do their best to ensure their experience is positive from beginning to end. 2. THEY ENGAGE THROUGH EFFECTIVE ADVERTISING From sharing services and products on social media to advertising online and in print, successful businesses know how to reach their customers. These days, people are just one click away from a competitor. Businesses who effectively use modern forms of marketing — and adapt as the tools evolve — position themselves well ahead of companies who rely strictly on word of mouth. The more marketing engages directly with customers, the stronger it is. 3. THEY KEEP STRIVING TO BE BETTER No matter how successful they become, the best companies continually strive to be better. They stay ahead of changes in their industry, pay attention to consumer behaviour and adapt to meet demands. And if a service or product they offer isn’t working, they change it. This passion and drive is reflected in every aspect of a successful business. We’re proud to showcase the best of our city in these pages.

ARCHERY STORE

Staying Right on Target By Trina Annand Photos Haas Photography

t is hard to find a sport the whole family can participate in together. Often family time is spread over a variety of activities with the majority sitting on the sidelines. Archery is a sport everyone can participate in together whether target shooting or hunting. Owners David Schlottke and Carson Toy were drawn to archery for the unique challenges it provides.

38

FineLifestyles

Archery is a year round sport at JimBows; with indoor archery lanes, lessons for every skill level as well as competition shooters need not worry about getting out of practice. “We encourage people to start their kids in the sport as young as possible. We have lessons starting at 10 years because that’s when they begin to have the physical skill and maturity needed,” says Toy, “We give them all

BEST OF THE BEST FEATURE

the tools to be successful in the sport, proper form and etiquette, a sense of responsibility.” The duo is quick to credit Hollywood for inspiring the next generation to the sport through movies like The Hunger Games and The Avengers as well as shows like The Walking Dead. “Archery is 60 per cent mental and 40 per cent shooting the bow, your mood

can really affect your performance. It’s not something you can rush through,” says Toy. Unlike rifle hunting, bow hunting is all about the hunter’s skill,. “Bow hunting requires a different set of skills than rifle hunting. It’s a completely unique experience. It’s more personal, you feel more connected,” says Schlottke. At Jim-Bows Archery, target competitors and hunters alike can find the high quality products and outstanding service they need to stay on target. But what truly sets Jim-Bows apart is their expert service that draws customers from other provinces and led the company to expand into their second location in Edmonton. Not simply selling bows, the business

fine tunes every bow they sell and offers comprehensive repair services. “The biggest part of our service is education. We teach customers about what we are doing to their bows and help them get to know them. That way if something isn’t quite right in the field they don’t have to drop everything, they can troubleshoot and fix it themselves. If they need some extra help we’re only a phone call away,” says Toy. Jim-Bows service extends far beyond the point of sale to all Jim-Bows customers. With a wide variety of high quality bows, arrows, broadheads, sights, stabilizers, knives, stands, clothes, bags, tags and much more, Jim-Bows is the ultimate

destination for the every archer whether a newcomer or a seasoned pro. “People always walk in looking for the best, most expensive bow. In reality the best bow is the one that fits you perfectly, it doesn’t matter the brand or price. The right fit lets you perform at your best,” says Schlottke. Whether you’re looking for practice or just starting out, looking to invest in a new bow or in need of maintenance, Jim-Bows is on target for you and your family. lthough baking is an enjoyable pastime for many, Over the Top Cakes Bakeshop takes it to a whole new level. With sculptors and local artists on staff, their baking is truly an art. Featuring cakes, French macarons, tarts, brownies and cupcakes in 12 flavours made daily, this fun bakeshop is a treat for the senses. In addition to the retail shop, they also make

custom cakes that range from simple slab cakes to over-the-top 3D sculpted cakes and wedding cakes. Owner Jennifer Thir has worked in several different fields over the years, but she has been baking and decorating cakes since she was 12 years old. What was once a hobby became her livelihood when she finally realized her dream and opened Over the Top Cakes in 2012. “I

was looking for a change, and opening my own shop was always a dream,” she says. Now the bakeshop is growing, with three pastry chefs and a team of decorators. In addition to their local customers, they have also had the opportunity to bake cakes for a number of celebrities who have visited the city, including Tim McGraw, OneRepublic, the Tragically Hip and Cirque de Soleil.

Thir’s team at Over the Top Cakes includes many talented bakers and decorators that truly make their cakes unique. “When I hire someone, I look for that something extra,” Thir explains. “It’s not always about hiring formally-trained cake decorators; in fact, artists and sculptors make great decorators as their skills can be transferred to mediums such as gum paste, fondant and edible food colour paints.”

Tucked away in St. Albert, Over the Top Cakes is located in a strip mall right off of Anthony Henday Drive, convenient for their Edmonton customers. The location may be the last place you might expect to find a cute little bakeshop, but this hidden gem is the cherry on top for any occasion.

Everything is done by hand at Over the Top Cakes, and they don’t use any plastic pieces as part of their decorations. Instead of using artificial flavouring, they source real fruit compounds and purees, setting them apart from other bakeries. Their retail location offers a selection of cakes available for dropin customers and their flavours are never dull. Orange creamsicle, Neapolitan and macaron cakes are all available daily, perfect for the last minute celebration or office party. The bakeshop also features a selection of treats from caramel popcorn and lavender shortbread to the world’s best brownies, according to Thir. For wedding cakes, Thir works closely with the couple to ensure they can find a cake to meet their budget. “We don’t work from set designs, so we can find the right option for them,” she explains. “One of the benefits of a custom shop!” Over the Top Cakes offers French macaron and cake decorating classes, and they are hoping to expand their offerings in the winter even further.

It’s All in the Detailing! Your car is cleaned while you shop with iCarwash® By Barbara Levorson Photos Christophe Benard

year ago, Sunghee Kim of iCarwash Detailing approached Southgate Centre Mall with a unique and time-saving idea; while customers shop, Kim and her technicians will clean and detail their vehicle. Using iCarwash’s state-of-theart pressure steam washers, they provide both a convenient and eco-friendly service at approximately half the price of their competitors. Their innovative technology allows iCarwash to clean a vehicle using only two gallons of water, compared to other facilities, which use between 38 to 100 gallons of water to do the same job.

Southgate customers have responded positively and demand has been growing since first offered in April.

The steam pressure units are imported from South Korea and unlike traditional water pressure systems, this technology uses very little water to produce steam which can clean, sanitize and deodorize. “No soap or water is used on the surface of the vehicle,” says Kim. “We do not use chemicals in our cleaning process — only natural, biodegradable products which remove dirt and oil better than chemical products and will not harm leather, vinyl

The vehicle is vacuumed and surface dirt is removed. Then, technicians meticulously steam clean every corner of the vehicle and hand polish to finish. Technicians are professionally and expertly trained in-house to ensure a high quality of service. Customers can choose between several packages for interior and/or exterior cleaning and when the vehicle is ready they are notified by text message. A portion of iCarwash’s sales is given to Mission of Mercy, an Edmonton based charity, which provides biosand water filters for children in India. “Many children and families in India need clean water,” explains Kim. “We are saving clean water here with our technology and this will give clean water to the next generation.” iCarwash Autodetailing Southgate Centre 5015 111 St. NW, Edmonton 587.759.5646 customerservice@icarwashautodetailing.com

CHARITY

Making MEMORIES MATTER By Barbara Levorson Photos Jonathon Lima Giroux

ive minutes from now, someone will be given a diagnosis that will change their life and those of their family’s. Another person will develop dementia in the time it takes to read this. Currently, over 46,000 people in Alberta have Alzheimer’s and other dementias; this is expected to increase to more than 100,000 in the next few years. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, with women comprising 72 per cent of those affected. It is irreversible and, unfortunately, fatal. The daily impacts of the disease profoundly affect family members as well. On June 20th, 300 people in Edmonton joined together for the annual Walk for Alzheimer’s, united in their goal to raise funds and awareness for this devastating disease that leaves families divided. Since 2008, the walk has helped to raise over $1.7 million for ASANT (Alzheimer Society for Alberta and the Northwest Territories), aided by sponsorship from Investors Group. The walk is a wonderful opportunity to make connections with other families living with this disease, gain a sense of camaraderie and support, as well as raise much needed funds for support and education services. HELP AND SUPPORT FOR TODAY, AND HOPE FOR TOMORROW Investors Group has been a title sponsor for ASANT for 10 years, and this support has made a positive impact on the services that ASANT is able to provide to their clients and families. According to Mark Mertens, the regional director of IG Financial Services in Alberta, their consultants are honoured to support ASANT, both financially and as volunteers. All funds contributed by consultants are matched by Investors Group. “Very few diseases have this type of long term impact on families,” explains Mertens. “Families experience the loss of their loved one, but they are still there.” The long-term support from Investors Group has helped to raise the awareness and ASANT’s profile, aiding its delivery of support services. One of these services is First Link, an early intervention service for newly diagnosed individuals. This physicianreferred service assists individuals and their families to connect with the Alzheimer Society and other support services available in their community. Another resource is the ASANT Café, which is an online forum offering access to information, education and support. In the ASANT Café, one can find helpful resource information and join the discussion board to connect with other families living with Alzheimer’s. It is important for individuals and families to seek assistance early in the process as it provides invaluable strategies and resources to managing the progression of the disease. ASANT, with the support from the public and Investors Group, are working to help individuals with Alzheimer’s and their families to live the best life possible. Preventative care can also make a difference: eat well, challenge your brain, create new experiences, be socially active and bring vibrancy to your life. There is no cause or cure for Alzheimer’s, but there is hope for creating a better tomorrow.

is always interesting. Her clothing lines are current, stylish, reasonably priced and suitable for a wide variety of occasions and clientele. I am always happy with the clothes I buy from E. G. Style and with the compliments I receive from friends.” At E. G. Style, women discover many hard-to-find product lines from across the country and around the world, from

the superior knitwear by Parkhurst of Montreal to the stunning statement pieces by Boo Radley of Australia. “I try to find lines not available elsewhere in Sherwood Park,” says Clark. “I look for brands that are classy yet comfortable. For example, we carry Liverpool and MAC jeans; these both have lots of stretch yet hold their shape well and are mid-to-high rise for the more mature woman. As for accessories, I look for interesting items, such as the bold, bright colours of Treska or the fun, Bohemian feel of Ginger Jar.” Many of the lines carried by E. G Style are Canadian. “I like to support Canadian designers,” says Clark. “And an additional benefit is that I can easily order in a different size whenever a client needs it. Joseph Ribkoff, our most popular line,

is very good at getting special orders to us quickly.” Another popular Canadian company they carry is Lisette L, wellknown for its Flaterie Fit pants. Clark and her staff are dedicated to fulfilling the needs of their clients, many of whom they know by first names. Knowledgeable about each product line, the staff can answer any questions. Local shopper Enid remarks, “I have been shopping at E. G. Style almost from the time the shop opened. I have always enjoyed the friendliness and helpfulness I receive from the staff. They remember names and they always have a sense of what one is looking for and what outfits suit you. As well, my husband always feels welcome when he drops into the store to buy gifts for special occasions.”

THE VERY BEST IN

Adult Living DEVELOPMENTS By Apolline Lucyk Photos Amanda Urban Photography/KTB Photography

T

he Christenson Group of Companies has been one of the most important names in adult living developments for more than 40 years. Owned by Greg Christenson and Peter Dirksen, Christenson Developments was founded in the 1970s by Lloyd Christenson, Greg’s father, and has since developed into a group of six interrelated companies that work together to construct excellent adult living developments: Christenson Communities, Christenson Equities, Christenson Developments, Can-Der Homes, Can-Der Construction and Arcon Design Services. The Christenson Group is known for their Urban Villages and innovative Aging in Place concepts. Christenson Group’s Urban Villages are cozy communities within larger urban areas that offer a great number of amenities within walking distance from each other. “There are homes for different age groups in the villages, so there are seniors, but also some young people living in the communities, and there’s immense walkability,” Christenson says. “In Centre in the Park — an Urban Village in Sherwood Park — there’s the Prairie Walk, which is about a 40 ft. wide walkway running through the centre of the project, and there’s a lot of city amenity buildings

around it, like hockey and curling rinks, theatres, restaurants and shopping centres.” The Urban Village concept encourages a healthy, active adult lifestyle where its residents can walk to all the urban amenities they have grown to love and expect. Having all the necessary amenities in walking distance of one’s home not only encourages an active lifestyle but also helps couples reduce their vehicle use. Many Urban Villages will soon have car share programs for couples with fewer vehicles. The villa bungalows and estate condos of the Urban Villages feature a wide range of living options to accommodate a number of lifestyles — active adult, retirement living, quality rentals and seniors’ housing. These diverse housing options offer a variety of features to meet the varying needs of their residents including optional meal plans, social amenities and even personal care options. “As couples near retirement, they look to vary their lifestyles,” Dirksen says. “They want to have more social gatherings at their homes, to be able to do more entertaining.” For that reason, there are a variety of social amenities in many of the residences. The bungalows also have luxury features such as walk-out

support for the families of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

“We have constructed a number of Urban Villages in the Edmonton Area,” he says. “Including Glastonbury Village, Southwoods Village and Devonshire Village.” The company has developments throughout central and northern Alberta, including Edmonton, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Sherwood Park, Camrose, Lacombe, Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer and Valleyview.

Christenson Group is also actively involved in Habitat for Humanity. “We are one of the three founding companies of Habitat for Humanity in Alberta,” Dirksen notes. The non-profit organization builds affordable homes for families in need and lets the families pay for them with a no-interest mortgage so they can work towards owning their own home. “Our company has donated five homes over the past six years,” says Dirksen.

The Aging in Place concept — a concept central to the urban villages — allows for residents to add amenities and service options to their plan as their needs change. “So as their needs increase, individuals or couples can simply have additional services brought to them right where they are,” Christenson explains. Furthermore, since there are such a wide variety of home styles available in the Urban Villages, people can purchase homes in the same urban village as their family members, making visits more convenient with family just a short walk away. The Christenson Group of Companies is very active in local initiatives, notably with the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta and Habitat for Humanity. For the Alzheimer’s Society, they host a Faceoff For Alzheimers ProAM. The event gives everyday hockey enthusiasts the chance to join NHL alumni on the ice for a weekend fundraiser for Alberta-based Alzheimer’s research. “It’s a great weekend and is very successful in bringing awareness about the disease.,” says Christensen. The event has also gained Government support. “We had an MLA all-star team playing two years ago,” Christenson says. “The Government often matches the money we raise.” In the past six years, the event has raised more than $8 million. The Christenson Group also hosts an Alzheimer’s Café monthly at Devonshire Village, which offers information and

With the Christenson Group, you can be sure you are getting the best home for your needs and lifestyle. The company ensures the residences they develop are of the best quality possible. “We’ve been building for more than 40 years and we’re all career builders,” Dirksen says. “We do a lot of research into different styles of houses and how urban villages work at their best, so the construction quality of our developments is really above average.” The Christenson Group of Companies has a number of new projects on the go in various areas of Alberta. “We currently have some bungalow townhouse projects we’re working on,” Dirksen says. “There is one coming up in River’s Edge at Cameron Heights, Lacombe Park Villas in St. Albert, and Heritage Creek with Parkbridge Homes in Spruce Grove.” Please visit their website for details on their new and ongoing developments, and to find which Christenson community is the right fit for you.

ince 2009, the family-operated artisan studio of Urban Concrete Countertops & Design has continued to evolve and explore the creative boundaries of concrete applications. Their success is now taking them in a new, and bigger, direction to Kelowna, B.C. giving them a greater presence in Western Canada. Ultimately, their vision is to have their product line of concrete panels and tiles available in every major city across North America. Urban Concrete uses a distinctive glass-fibre reinforced concrete resulting in a finished product which is lighter and limitless in design capabilities. They have an extensive line of ‘green’ concrete products, ranging from countertops, sinks, furniture, fireplace surrounds, and panels and tiles for both interior and exterior use. As part of their national expansion plans, their focus is on the tile market, offering a wide variety of tiles and panels for fireplaces, shower surrounds, interior feature walls and exterior cladding.

“Concrete tiles used as the medium can transform a space,” says Chris Fenske, owner. “Our product gives clients a design option which is hard to find in other materials.”

Urban Concrete’s tile line comes in four popular finishes. The Classic tile is smooth polished, giving it a contemporary look, and often used in fireplace surrounds. The Mountaineer tile has a rustic finish with variances in both the colour and pattern. This is used in feature walls, outdoor planters and other landscape designs. The Board Form tile realistically resembles planks of wood and can be applied to exterior finishes such outdoor fireplaces, kitchens and exterior cladding. Finally, the Cable tile is an industrial-looking tile with notches in each corner, and is often used for feature walls and exterior cladding.

The tile product line has been extremely successful since its launch, and Urban Concrete has enjoyed recurring design opportunities with builders and designers. They are also excited for opportunities to work with new clients who may find a use for their product line. “We have recently partnered with our friends at EtchBuilt, and our panels are currently being featured on a new build of theirs,” says Fenske. David Etcheverry, owner of EtchBuilt says, “Working with Urban has been a pleasure. When I was looking for the right material to compliment the space, I wanted something clean and innovative, and their panels were the right fit. They turned out great and were easy to install. I would definitely look at using this material again.”

Urban Concrete is anticipating continued success with the tile product line, but they still enjoy special-order custom work. “We aspire to bring new design pieces to life, and love the challenge this presents for manufacturing,” says Fenske. “We created this new product line as a result of demand from our clients, and our work will continue to reflect our passion for design.” Urban Concrete Countertops & Design 780.468.2933 urbanconcretecountertops.com visit for a location near you

tress is an unpleasant fact of life. Even though stress can be triggered differently for everyone, there are some common stressors that affect all of us to some degree. One of the more common stresses in our lives is going to the dentist. We’ve all been there, sitting in the chair as we anticipate the worst. You’ve had the check up now it’s time to hear the answer to the much-considered question: to drill or not to drill? At Phan Dental Design they understand visiting the dentist can be a harrowing thought and make it a priority to do as much as they can to make your visit as comfortable as possible. A Bit of History Dr. Jack Phan graduated from the University of Alberta School of Dentistry in 1999. Recognized for his clinical skills, he was awarded the North American Oral Surgeons Student. His diligence and determination allowed him the ability to open his own practice in Fort McMurray in 2001 and South Common Dental Centre in Edmonton in 2004. Dr. Phan’s high regard for his patients on a personal level and his dedication to their well being has always been the focus of his business. As a devoted health professional, he maintains high standards of service excellence for himself and his team. PHAn DentAl Dr. Phan and his team are pleased to serve the Fort McMurray and Edmonton areas with two highly efficient and professional locations. A recent addition to the group will allow clients in the Windermere area to enjoy a unique dental experience. “My dream of 15 years has come true with the opening of Phan Dental,” he says. The idea behind the new clinic is to give clients a peace of mind about coming to see the dentist. The relaxed, spalike atmosphere will assist visitors in feeling more at ease. During your first visit, you will be greeted with a warm friendly welcome from a concierge at the front desk and receive a full tour of the facility, which will help you get to know what to expect. Patients and those accompanying them are offered a beverage and snack of their choice from the refreshment centre. iPads loaded with games, magazines and the internet are always available. The entire clinic is designed to make the client’s visit pleasurable from the moment they walk in the door. Visitors are encouraged to kick off their shoes and slide their tired feet into a pair of warm and cosy velvet slippers. Guests are even welcome to take the slippers home with them at the end of their visit. Nobody likes to sit in an uncomfortable reception room chair waiting for the ‘dreaded’ dental appointment. At Phan Dental, guests can enjoy some quiet time in the theatre-style waiting area. Relaxing in a comfortable massage chair and watching a favourite program helps keep one’s mind off the stress of sitting in the dentist chair. The examination rooms at Phan Dental come with all the latest technology, including luxury dental chairs that offer a memory feature. This allows the chair to recall the client’s height and weight and adjust itself accordingly for the next time he/she comes to visit. Phan Dental offers all types of services, from the basic cleanings to more specific services such as implants, crowns, braces and more. Those who cringe at the sound of the drill can rest at ease. Phan Dental’s equipment is all state of the art, which means no hand tools, such as drills, will be heard anywhere on the premises. All hand pieces are electronic and make very little sound. Other innovative equipment includes a 3D scanning system, which utilizes laser technology to get a more thorough adaptation of the client’s dentition and surrounding bone structures. Also, Phan Dental offers visual x-rays of the teeth, bones and surrounding soft tissue to determine any problems. Visual x-rays are considered a safer method because less radiation is needed. The team at Phan Dental understand there are those who have a higher sense of anxiety when it comes to seeing the dentist. For such individuals, oral sedations are available to help increase the comfort level for longer procedures. From time to time, surgery is needed and the team at Phan Dental is very aware of the amount of stress this can cause a client. The clinical theatre has been designed specifically to address this

Dancefusion offers a wide range of classes for all ages and levels, and while most of the dance classes are year-long, the studio offers many 10 week class options as well, both for children and adults. “Children as young as a year and a half can start the classes with a parent, those can be a great bonding opportunity,” Mary Anne notes. Dancefusion offers instruction in a great many types of dance, including ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, break dance, belly dance, burlesque, acro, musical theatre, pom and cheer, and all the studio’s teachers are specialists in their disciplines. Dancefusion offers a number of boys-only classes, several parent and tot classes, as well as a power program. The power program is designed to encourage dancers from across disciplines to learn the foundations of ballet, preparing serious ballet students for the professional arena.

More than 20 staff teach at the studio. Some of the studio’s talented instructors include Gail Ledger, a highly regarded tap instructor who has trained with many of the top tap dancers and instructors in the area; Anne Marie Schotte, a gifted choreographer, dancer and musical theatre instructor who has worked extensively in both Canada and the United States; and Richard Andries, one of Edmonton’s top hip-hop instructors known for his work with the likes of Ludacris, Chris Brown and Shawn Desman. Instructor Laurie Alston worked for many years with Disney and on various cruise ships before coming to Dancefusion. Mary Anne’s daughter, Cally, teaches at the studio, as well. Cally trained at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet professional division and was a member of Ballet British Columbia before joining the team at Dancefusion. Dancefusion is gearing up for their 19th season of dance instruction, “We are looking forward to our best year yet,” says Mary Anne. The Dancefusion team

COMBINING OUTDOOR BEAUTY with Indoor Comfort By FL Staff Photos by KTB Photography

ffering protection from the elements while enjoying the outdoors, Suncoast Enclosures is a modern and innovative company that provides the best of both worlds so you can make the most of your summer. With three custom products available, including a threeseason room, screen room and louvered roof, each comes with its own distinct benefits. What they all have in common, however, is the ability to bring the outdoors inside, to block out sun and wind and to allow varying levels of privacy.

By adding a polycarbonate roof, which allows 95 per cent of light to pass through, you can enjoy the room even on rainy days. On overcast days, the polycarbonate roof gives off a glow that creates an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. The lightweight aluminum frames are all custom powdercoated in hundreds of different colours and even anodized to match existing colour schemes.

“With our rooms, you feel connected to the outdoors while still enjoying the comforts of home,” says Daniel Butler, corporate general manager of Edmonton. “Your sunroom is like an extra living space with added optional amenities, such as an entertainment unit, dining room or fireplace.”

THE THREE-SEASON ROOM The three-season room is Suncoast’s forté, offering a bright space with 75 per cent ventilation when the windows are open and extended enjoyment of the seasons when they are closed. Three-season rooms are often pre-wired for electricity. “Many people find they can use the rooms for nine months of the year with a small heat source,” says Butler. Whatever your reason, an extension into nature is always welcome.

A Suncoast enclosure, which utilizes high-tension screens as roof panels engineered for harsh Canadian winters, offers homeowners protection without feeling enclosed by a roof or walls and is a great addition to a hot tub or pool. It keeps insects and leaves out of the pool without closing off the sun or beautiful night sky.

SCREEN ROOMS Screen rooms are the reason Suncoast has been in business for more than 20 years. A screen room allows you to be entirely outdoors to enjoy a light breeze, a warm day or a starry night without the hassle of mosquitoes, wasps or flies; in other words, no discomfort, annoyance or aggravation from those pesky insects.

Screen rooms can also always be turned into three season rooms with the simple addition of windows, giving you the ultimate flexibility should your needs change in time. Best of all, Suncoast rooms are designed and built for your existing deck or patio, eliminating the need to build a new floor or foundation. THE LOUVERED ROOF If you’re looking for shade while sitting outside, the louvered roof has the appearance of a pergola, a common feature in gardens or outdoor sitting areas. A pergola faces east to west and blocks direct sunlight for those seated beneath, while remaining open to the sky. With the touch of a button, the slats on the louvered roof can close to block out rain with a tight seal. Butler says owner Randie James was instrumental in the creation and design of the louvered roof. “Randie changed the material from crimped steel to extruded aluminum,” he says. “Extruded aluminum is lighter and stronger — and we also protect it with a powder-coated finish making it beautiful and long-lasting.” As an added bonus, the louvered roof is

solar-powered — saving you money and the world energy. Butler says it’s not only James’ revolutionary and innovative thinking that’s kept him a loyal employee for nine years; it’s also being part of such a great team. “Randie is open-minded to allow for personal growth, building jobs within the company,” says Butler. “He encourages a team environment where everyone knows one another.” Suncoast’s head office in Edmonton features a 15,000 sq. ft. warehouse and 1,800 sq. ft. showroom. “All of our products are on display, so our customers are able to envision the space and know what to expect when investing in our products,” says Butler. Suncoast is continuously innovating for customer satisfaction. “At Suncoast, we strive to make our products and service even better,” notes Butler. FITNESS STUDIO

or many women, building core and upper body strength is one of their greatest fitness challenges. Chantelle Beasley used to go to all kinds of classes at her gym to improve her fitness but always felt it was a chore just getting there. When she discovered pole dancing workouts, she was hooked. “It’s actually fun and the upper body and core strength I’ve developed is incredible,” she says. She enjoyed it so much she opened Aradia Fitness in Sherwood Park four years ago and has since taken over

the two Aradia Fitness locations in Edmonton. While Beasley is now able to hang upside down on her pole, among other tricks, not many students start off at that level. Students of all body shapes and ages come to Aradia Fitness. Some have dance or gymnastics backgrounds but many are just coming for fitness. They start with an introductory pole class, called Pole 101, before moving on to beginner, intermediate, advanced and eventually master classes.

BEST OF THE BEST FEATURE

For beginners, the classes start with a Pilates-based floor work out. “Students can do those exercises at home and they’ll slowly progress depending on how much strength they have,” says Beasley. “In a few weeks, they’re usually able to lift themselves off the floor. They’ll definitely see an improvement in upper body strength.” Student Kari Dyer, a stay-at-home mom of two boys, says she doesn’t often have the chance to feel empowered and sexy, but when she comes to her pole dancing class at Aradia Fitness, she completely

makes up for it. “I am not the most coordinated of people,” Dyer writes on Facebook. “I pretty much have two left feet, yet our instructor is fantastic. She’s always incredibly encouraging and helps us master each new move, spin and exercise. It’s amazing how much fun you can have while working out!” One thing many students like about Aradia Fitness is the classes are more like dance classes. “As an adult, it’s hard to find dance classes, especially if you don’t have any dance experience,” says Beasley. While some are very interested in the dance routines, others are keen to compete. Aradia Fitness has 25 instructors on staff at all three locations and they are able to provide a variety of classes where students can learn the best from each one. Besides pole dancing classes, Aradia Fitness also offers a Booty and Body Shaper class for those who want to improve strength. Contortion classes offer extreme stretching for flexibility and there’s also a Pole Circuit Boot Camp class that combines pole training and cardio. Monthly memberships to Aradia Fitness give students access to all three locations in Edmonton and Sherwood Park as well as two pole dancing classes per week and unlimited classes of all other kinds. If you’re interested in giving pole dancing classes a try, an introductory session is just $25. “You don’t need to be strong to try,” says Beasley. “You should just come and see if you like it.”

When you step into Christopher Clayton Furniture, you step into a world of beautiful design. Since 2012, their creative team has brought their customers the best and most intriguing design options from around the world. “Good design is global,” explains Trevor Compton, partner and sales manager. “We find pieces we love that are unique to Edmonton; we are proud to be able to source these pieces for our customers. We strive to hand pick the best designs.”

hey employ four in-house designers, with over 60 years of experience amongst them. They each bring with them a different set of aesthetics and personality to their designs, and appreciate the eclectic mix of different design styles. Christopher Clayton carries a full line of furniture, accessories, custom bedding, drapery and upholstery. “We love to work in all styles, from traditional and classic to modern and space age,” says Compton. “Blended and mixed designs can harmonize well. Many of these design elements can still sit sideby-side beautifully.” Best of all, the lines of furniture they carry fit every budget and taste. “We have pieces at entry level pricing up to aspirational pricing.” Clients can see their designs come to life both in the design room and through Christopher Clayton’s innovative planning software, Icovia. “Many people have difficulty envisioning the completed design without actually seeing it,” explains Compton. “This software allows us to create a bird’s eye view of the floor plan and properly evaluate the space for good flow and walking paths. We can see the furniture layout and even model flexible floor plans for different event situations.” The ability to see the finished product and layout can alleviate any customer fears. “Icovia design planning is offered as a complimentary, value-added service which greatly assists in creative room design,” adds Compton. other designers. “Many designers will come in to see the unique resources we have available for their own projects,” explains Compton. “Everyone is trying to achieve individuality and our design room offers a whole new avenue to explore.” The design team advises clients on how to create an individualized space which reflect the owner’s personality by assembling personal things, whether they are antique or modern, and finding the creative thread to bring them all together. Part of the design service at Christopher Clayton is Above the Bank Interiors, an in-house design service offered by presidentAl Black. Black has 23 years of design experience, and has worked on medium to high-end projects here in Canada and abroad in Denver and New Zealand. He is passionate about providing a full design experience to customers by combining all design elements for one-stop shopping. Black can work with customers who are doing full renovations and ground-up design. Above the Bank sources custom wallpaper and carpets, which can be custom sized and coloured through five different carpet suppliers. “With Above the Bank Interiors, we can handle all aspects of interior design,” explains Compton. In addition, virtually all their furniture can be customizable. Clients can choose different options for size, colour, finish, firmness and fabrics for a countless array of possibilities. They also offer custom bedding and drapery to coordinate with furniture options. The store sources furniture from an extensive list of suppliers, such as Henredon, one of the oldest furniture companies in North America, who create classically beautiful furniture of superior quality. Christopher Clayton is the only supplier in Western Canada of furniture manufacturer Weiman Preview, who craft comfortable, curved pieces that are organic in design. One of the more innovative furniture manufacturers featured is Lee Industries from North Carolina. They use soy-based bio-upholstery, which has earned them certification with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forestry Stewardship Council. This revolutionary technology saves 57 gallons of crude oil daily in their soy-based cushion. The back cushions are made from 116 recycled plastic bottles. In

addition, they use recycled fiber filling in pillows, recycled metal components and organic fabrics. Another eco-friendly manufacturer is Maria Yee, which uses only plantation grown wood and ecologically sustainable wood products. The entire manufacturing process is sensitive to the environment, from material sourcing, water based finishes and vegetable tanned leather, to re-purposing waste back into fuel. “Pieces from these manufacturers are a real source of pride for people to be able to purchase products with little impact on the environment,” explains Compton. One of the current design trends is an interest in oversized art, accessories and lighting to create a dramatic visual statement. People are looking for striking pieces for personal expression, to tell a

story or spark a conversation. “Customers have so much exposure to wonderful pieces through their own travels, from television or in magazines,” explains Compton. “For example, a client may go to Paris and see an exciting design item. We work diligently to research and bring these elements here to Edmonton. It is so unexpected for clients to see these unique and wonderful pieces here in our store.” The designers at Christopher Clayton are also always looking for the new forecast colours. While bold colours such as teal, orange and lime green are still popular accent colours, dusty rose has been a huge influence at the last two designer shows. “Blush is the new colour,” explains Compton. “It is very washed out and pale. In contrast, we have also seen a strong claret colour – almost blood red.”

Christopher Clayton Furniture prides itself in superior customer service and the dedication of their design team to innovative design planning. “In September, our store will be infused with new goods and customers will be able to see the new influences for the fall,” says Compton. “We are looking forward to unveiling a new line in September, which will be very exciting.” Customers can be confident the designers at Christopher Clayton Furniture will help them to love the way they live. GROWING

“Life, as a whole, is about growth and learning to adapt,” Megan Ledarney, instructor/creator/owner of The Extensionist Consultancy.

What is TTM?

S

peaking from many years of experience, Ledarney recalls an adolescence many would rather forget. At age 12, it was confirmed Ledarney was the victim of a condition called Trichotillomania (TTM or trich) — an emotional state that creates a compulsion to pull out one’s own hair. TTM has a variety of severities that include pulling hair from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes and other parts of the body, causing baldness.

TTM is the known root for body-focused repetitive behaviour (BFRB) such as skin picking and nail biting. Thankfully, it is a treatable condition that requires a great deal of care and understanding from friends, family and other support systems.

A Bit of Background Being so young to battle such a misunderstood condition, Ledarney experienced the harshness of bullying in school and had little support from staff unaware of TTM and how to handle the

Visiting the Extensionist Salon “It’s not commonly known, but 50 per cent of all women will experience some form of hair loss in their lifetime,” states Ledarney. Whether the condition is temporary or permanent, it is still something that can steal away a woman’s confidence and make her feel unattractive. Our team goal at the Extensionist Salon is to assist women in feeling good about themselves.” Potential salon guests of the salon are encouraged to book a consultation when the stylist will talk to the client about her goals and what kind of look she wants to achieve. The process and various types of extension installation techniques are explained. Guests enjoy being served by some of the best stylists in the hair extension industry in a comforting and friendly atmosphere. “We keep everything upbeat and high energy; we want our clients to feel ultracomfortable,” Ledarney adds.

situation with the professionalism and delicacy needed. As a result, she left school in Grade 9. At 17, Ledarney’s life took a turn when she discovered Jessica Simpson Clip-on Hair Extensions. “Using the extensions gave me the confidence I needed,” she recalls. No matter the cause of hair loss, hope, dignity and self-esteem are greatly affected. At last, Ledarney was able to move forward and gain the motivation she needed to pursue a career in offering hair extension services. After studying through West Coast Hair (WCH) out of Minneapolis, Ledarney eventually opened her own in-home specialty studio. A strong-willed young woman fuelled by experience, Ledarney knew the best way to make her business a true success was

to move from her hometown of Medicine Hat to a larger city such as Edmonton. As time went on, Ledarney worked extensively at developing her craft. She became a leader and an innovator in the field of hair extensions by developing the Integrated Wefting Technique, which is presently trademarked as VOGUEPEARL™ — a no-damage extension method designed specifically for clients with sensitive hair types and various traumas. Today, the Extensionist serves clients from across Canada and even some areas of Europe. In 2014, Ledarney opened The Extensionist Consultancy with the goal of serving others and helping people feel good about themselves.

BEST OF THE BEST FEATURE

This technique was personally developed by Ledarney to create a natural looking appearance without causing damage to existing hair. Utilizing micro beads and wefts, VOGUEPEARL™ does not require glues, adhesives, solvents, braids, threads or fusions. This stunning technique lasts four to seven months and leaves hair looking full and fantastic.

An Exciting Career Opportunity Another thrilling development is the opening of The Extensionist Academy — a brand new training facility located just 10 ten minutes from the Extensionist Salon. “At the academy we offer a graduating program to give people the opportunity for a unique and exciting career,” says Ledarney. She adds that, with no current government certification in place, this academy is truly one-of-a-kind, bringing the hair extension industry to the forefront.

“We provide an opportunity for a unique and exciting career where students can learn more about Trichology (hair loss) studies, hair replacement services and hair extension services,” explains Ledarney. Students are taught 12 methods of unique installation and hair replacement types. These natural looking methods are safe for all hair types. Ledarney adds academy students are currently looking for clients who will allow them to train under the close supervision of their instructor. For a reduced fee, guests of the academy receive top quality services while students are given the opportunity to advance their craft. “This gives everyone the chance to benefit from our services,” she notes. The Extensionist Academy and Service Studio is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Moving Forward This could have been a tragic tale of bullying, defeat, self-loathing and failure, but Ledarney would have none of that. Her courage and determination helped her reach beyond social stigmas and she has become a leader and an innovator who has travelled the world studying her craft. Presently, she is the nation’s first hair extensionist/master trainer to be recognized and receive insured credentials from the International Accreditation Organization (IAO) recognized by the New York State Department. What’s ahead? For Ledarney, the sky’s the limit! She looks forward to one day opening salons all across North America that will specialize in the advancement of no-damage hair extension techniques.

hen you’re embarking on the home building process, finding a builder who offers excellent customer service is as important as choosing floor plans and finishings. Founded in 1976 by Henri Rodier, Coventry Homes is one of Edmonton’s most established and reputable builders. With an emphasis on creating highquality homes and an exceptional customer experience, the company has built in multiple developments throughout the city, including Langdale, a ‘Best of the Best’ community. Coventry Homes prides itself on being truly customer orientated. Their mission? Creating a great customer experience every time. At each touch point throughout the building process (pre, during and post build), they take the necessary steps to make sure their customers are satisfied. “We give our customers care and attention, getting to know them on a personal level,” says Mark Rodier, Coventry’s general manager. “Home building is a journey and we go on it as a team.” Coventry offers a wide range of home styles including bungalows, two-storeys, duplexes and townhomes. As a flexible builder, the company can modify floor plans to suit their client’s specific needs or build a completely custom home. With assistance from a design consultant, clients choose their own colours, flooring and finishings. Where others offer many popular upgrade options, Coventry’s abundant selection of high quality ‘standard’ finishings — multiple granite, hardwood, tile and handrail options — set them apart. “We give the full package up front, so there aren’t hidden costs,” says Mark. Client feedback is extremely important to the Coventry team. Founder and CEO Hendi Rodier personally reviews every

customer survey; he and the management team use that feedback to refine and enhance their process and relationship with clients. An area sales manager works with clients from the beginning of the building process through completion, so they have a consistent point of contact and weekly updates as their home is being built. This focus on customer service is the foundation of the company, and a key part of its success: 56 per cent of Coventry’s business comes from referrals. Coventry has won multiple awards in the housing industry in its 39year history, including the J.D. Power Builder of Excellence award, the Legacy Achievement Award from The Alberta New Home Warranty Program, and numerous awards for particular home designs and developments. Most recently, they won the 2015 PHBI New Home Buyers Choice Award for Best Single Family Home for The Willingdon, one of its many designs. While some companies building in Edmonton originate from other parts of the country, Coventry’s roots ensure its team has a strong understanding of what Edmontonians want from their home. “We originated in Edmonton and we’ve stayed here, focusing on Edmonton and the surrounding areas,” says Mark. He adds though Coventry has grown into a large company, it maintains the same care, passion, and appreciation for customers as it has since its inception. “Every day we strive to make sure Edmontonians are as happy as possible with their experience,” says Mark. “We’re not trying to be the biggest in the city, we’re trying to be the best.” Coventry Homes 17615 – 111 Ave NW 780.453.5100 www.coventry-homes.com

Lori works with existing furniture, and sometimes adds accessories or artwork to enhance the space. For houses that are empty, Lori arranges to rent furniture and accessories. “Staging your home properly will shorten the time on the market and increase its value,” explains Lori. Often, the purchaser will ask to buy the accessories she has chosen because they are so appealing. “I have worked with million dollar homes and they sometimes receive multiple offers in a short time.” Some advice she has for homeowners is to declutter. “This can sometimes be very difficult,” says Lori. “I always say ‘for every one item you bring into your home, take two items out!’ Keep only the things you really love. People want to come home to a peaceful space.”

This attention to customers is an essential element at Fresh Look Design. “I work until my client is 100 per cent satisfied.” ABOVE Lori Drinkwater

he 3 Amigos Authentic Mexican Restaurant is your passport to fun! From the moment you walk in the door, you know you’re in for a great time. Like the culture and cuisine of the land down south, the atmosphere at The 3 Amigos is fresh and vibrant. From the brightly painted walls and colourful banners to the playful, pulsating rhythms of Latin music, The 3 Amigos invites you to celebrate the joys of living!

To get the party started, The 3 Amigos offers daily drink specials. Margarita Mondays features the largest selection of margarita flavours in the city. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, enjoy the two most tantalizing Mexican liquors — tequila and mezcal. Thursdays and Fridays will have you geared up for the weekend with deals on Mexican beer buckets and Patron shots, respectively. The menu also features several craft cocktails concocted by the talented Rosales brothers. Try Alfredo’s Jalapeño

Moving further inland, the fields and farms of Oaxaca provide a cornucopia of fresh foods to make your mouth water. Feast on an empanada, bursting with vegetables and your choice of either chicken or beef, or test your taste buds with some spicy burritos norteños or torta ahogada. In the lush forests of Oaxaca, the trees are dripping with flavourful fruits. Their juicy goodness can be found in restaurant’s main dishes, such as the Al Pastor con piña tacos and its desserts — their flan de mango is a fan favourite. Oaxaca is known as “The Land of the Seven Molés.” The delicious flavours of these different sauces are achieved by

combining 20 to 30 different ingredients in a complex and time-consuming process. To prepare a molé is truly a labour of love. At The 3 Amigos, various molés can be found on the menu. For example, their pozolé, a traditional soup of hominy corn cooked in an herb-filled pork broth, is topped with red molé while the chicken or steak enchilada is prepared with your choice of red, green or poblano molé. Of course, no party would be complete without entertainment. The 3 Amigos features live mariachi music on Friday and Saturday evenings. Sports fans can come out and support Mexico’s soccer team as it plays in tournaments around the world; the games are shown on the restaurant’s big screen television. MUSIC SCHOOL & RECORDING STUDIO

94

FineLifestyles

EDMONTON

BEST OF THE BEST FEATURE

M

usic is all around us. It’s the cadence of a bustling street and the melodious whirr of the wind. There is something about it that inspires us, and always has. Work songs have helped us endure a hard day’s labour, we’ve congregated to rejoice and mourn with hymns, and some of the most influential individuals in our history have inspired change through their lyrics. Some view it as a vehicle of expression, others as a catalyst for introspection, and so many as a simple joy, but music is inside us all. Resonate Music School & Studio is a playground for our inner musician. There are 19 soundtreated classrooms in a wonderful facility that also contains a full-service recording studio. It’s evident the value of a complete experience is not lost here, and it’s no surprise to see the walls adorned with a Top Choice Music School plaque for each year since the doors first opened. From the moment you enter the lobby, you can feel the energy and excitement. Younger students amuse themselves at the iPad bars while their parents perk up with a complimentary coffee from the refreshment centre; everyone looks keen to be around. It’s a far cry from images of music lessons past. The instructors aren’t the authoritarian figures of yesteryear, just musicians enthusiastic to pass on their craft, and the students don’t approach this as a weekly chore. It doesn’t take much exploration to discover this environment didn’t manifest itself. Those responsible for founding Resonate were underwhelmed by the way music was being taught in the Edmonton area, and sought to reinvigorate a seemingly stagnant industry. Between musical education and entertainment, they imagined synergy instead of dichotomy, envisioned a place where creativity was unbounded and enjoyment was the impetus for development. The result? The Resonate Membership Plan.

What’s the Plan? The Membership Plan embodies Resonate’s mission to offer a new way to learn music. At its core is a 30-minute private lesson each week, but that’s essentially where the orthodoxy ends. For starters, there is no mandatory curriculum. These lessons are fully customized and tailored to each individual’s needs and abilities. Some students elect to navigate a more traditional path towards Royal Conservatory exams and theoretical proficiency, while others seek to hone their skills by covering the latest Ed Sheeran single. In fact, Ed Sheeran himself recently surprised a student on stage at Resonate’s annual Play for Pets fundraiser for the Edmonton

Humane Society. The two proceeded to carry out an impromptu duet that neither is likely to forget. That remarkable moment is a testament to the company’s objective to offer a comprehensive musical experience, including opportunities for students to perform the music they work so hard to create.

Never stop learning The fundamentally distinguishing feature of the Plan, however, is that it is not confined to correspond with the academic year. Before Resonate, it was universally standard for music students to go without lessons during the summer months and then, should they overcome inertia, dust off their instruments and re-familiarize themselves in fall. Members here are subject to no such disruption. The school is open seven days a week throughout the entire year, allowing students to learn continuously. While this may seem like a sensible and intuitive concept, it’s one that’s been virtually absent from the industry until now. In addition to the obvious benefits of constant progress, the consistency of a year-round secured time slot is conducive to building a stronger instructor-student relationship, which is ultimately the cornerstone of any private lesson.

Making it up This continuous instructional format might normally raise some scheduling concerns, but although the Membership Plan was conceived out of passion, it is propelled by practicality. The team at Resonate appears to be cognizant of the scarcity of time and realizes accommodating potential scheduling conflicts is paramount to the Plan’s functionality. To address this, they have introduced another industry first: unlimited makeup lessons. While beauty often lies in the details, the beauty of this feature is its simplicity. If a student gives 12 hours notice that they will not be attending their lesson, that lesson will be credited to them and made up later. No justification required. No questions asked. No extra fees. It is this flexibility that has allowed more than 1,700 registrants to pursue their musical education over Resonate’s two and a half years, despite the perpetually dynamic nature of busy lives.

Sweetening the Deal In concert with customization and flexibility, the Plan emphasizes

incentivization. Although improving as a musician is motivation in itself, Resonate integrates some supplementary member benefits in order to make sure their students always know their growth is recognized. For instance, from the moment a member receives their card they begin to accrue rewards points, redeemable for everything from violin strings and apparel to iTunes cards and karaoke machines. And because art is meant to be shared, students are awarded an hour of time in the Resonate Recording Studio for every three months of membership so they can use the skills they’ve developed to make a professional quality recording to show off to friends and family.

Hey Dunna! Of course, you don’t have to be a student to enjoy the use of the recording studio. Musicians of all ages, abilities and genres are welcomed by decorated head engineer and producer Justin “Dunna” McDonough. McDonough, a well-respected artist himself, strives to help clients create their song, their way. Despite yielding EMA winning records, the studio maintains a price point that makes it accessible to aspiring artists and musical hobbyists. Resonate offers a full spectrum of studio services including recording, mixing, mastering and songwriting, as well as corporate services such as jingle production and event entertainment. Amidst their success, Resonate’s commitment to community has remained steadfast. They work with a variety of charitable organizations and frequently supply recording packages for talent competitions around the city. In one particularly heartwarming case, they worked pro bono with a young songwriter afflicted by Fibrous Dysplasia to assist him in his fundraising efforts. It is this type of devotion to their greater vision that has allowed them to contribute so much to music in Edmonton in such a brief time. So whether you’re a budding artist, seasoned rockstar, or simply a lover of music, head down to Resonate and experience it for yourself. The first stage of Langdale’s development in Windermere began in 2007 and it has undergone eight consecutive years of construction, making it possible to buy a brand new home in an established community. Many fine builders have constructed homes in the area, but Coventry Homes, Pacesetter Homes, Sterling Homes, Marcson Homes and Augusta Fine Homes all currently have showhomes open for viewing. Framing Your

Vision With Insightful Eye Care By: Trina Annand Photos Jonathan Lima Giroux

Sight is one of our most important senses, which is why vision loss can affect every part of a person’s life. To look and see your best, you’ll want to see a skilled optometrist with an eye for detail and a passion for fashion.

t Vision by Design Optometry, patients find a modern boutique filled with unique high quality eyewear matched by superb service. Optometrist Sarah Keep has a passion for eye care and fashion, so blending the two together in her own clinic was a natural step. “I have always loved the attention to detail and customer service you get when you shop locally. You can tell when an owner has put their heart and soul into the business — it is a true personification of who they are. This was my goal for Vision by Design,” says Keep. Carrying the latest styles while offering cutting edge services in a welcoming and creative atmosphere has proved a recipe for success for Keep and her highly trained team. “Our goal is to create an unforgettable patient experience. A move last year to a new location allowed Vision by Design to expand both their inventory and their diagnostic equipment, ensuring a more precise prescription, as well as early detection of any potential vision problems. “We use our eyes for everything,” says Keep, “Many diseases are preventable or treatable if caught early enough. We need to be proactive about ocular health, it could mean the difference between saving your vision and losing it.” Early detection of vision problems is especially important for children, as learning is 80 percent visual, effecting a child’s interactions with the world as well as their function is school. Each and every assessment at Vision by Design includes a scan with the Optical Coherence Tomographer, an MRI for the eye. The device allows Keep and her patients to view individual layers of the retina, checking for any signs of disease below the surface. “I believe it’s the patient’s right to understand their health. This technology provides a tool to allow us to thoroughly educate our patients and provide them with a better understanding of their vision and how to properly take care of their eyes,” says Keep. To better serve clients, the business also offers custom lenses. Once frames are selected, a specialized instrument takes various measurements based on eye movement through a frame. These measurements are used to manipulate the doctor’s prescription, creating a completely customized solution that is more comfortable and even more accurate.

They have really become a statement piece in our wardrobes. We love helping people find the right pair of glasses for any taste or need,” says Keep, who dresses an outfit perfectly paired with a new frame style to inspire her patients. From classic to cutting edge, patients can find a style uniquely theirs. “Glasses can really change how you feel. Each frame can make you feel like a different person. Morrow offers group classes, which are both motivational and enjoyable. Workouts are modified for each member to accommodate experience levels and any recent injuries. Healthy Rhino boasts high member retention because Morrow’s fitness approach delivers results, and clients have fun doing it. Healthy Rhino also offers meal planning, using the client’s own food. “It’s not about weighing or measuring or counting calories,” explains Morrow. “If you decide to have a treat, we will discuss how to balance that to still achieve your goals.” Morrow is passionate about this, saying, “You can still live your life. I will work with you to find balance between nutrition, working out and enjoying your life.” Healthy Rhino has a training atmosphere with a home-like quality. Having children there is an opportunity to teach them how to share and demonstrate good behaviour; and everyone looks out for each other’s kids. Safety is of paramount importance. Customers are always impressed with the touch-screen booths and the number of people it holds. “When you think of a photo booth, you might think of the tiny crammed booth you’ve seen at the mall, with a hard metal seat,” says Dennie. “Our booth can actually hold up to ten people.” As well, customers are able to take advantage of other features such as live video messages from all their guests and digital green screen backgrounds. With an office in Calgary and one in Edmonton, they are able to travel to events virtually anywhere in Alberta. “This is all we do and I think that makes a difference,” says Dennie. “A lot of other companies do a ton of different things or they operate on a part-time basis; we focus entirely on this and we do it well.” Dennie and Cheryl started Mojo Photo Booth when Cheryl was pregnant with their first child and have grown their business and their family in tandem. Providing a flexible schedule allows them maximum family time, raising their kids in the photo booth lifestyle, according to Dennie. Owner Elli Grassmuck has been combining her passion for people and pottery for decades. She discovered her love for pottery when she enrolled in a class after moving to the city. “I wasn’t very good at it at first,” she chuckles. “But I’m stubborn and I enjoyed doing it so I never gave up.” Eventually, she opened a retail store, featuring the work of prominent provincial potters. 20 years ago, she opened a studio and began offering classes. Today, along with KJ MacAlister and Lori Boutestein, she happily shares her

The studio offers pottery-making classes for both children and adults. “We’ve had students as young as four and as old as 82,” says Elli. “You should never stop learning; there is always a new challenge. I have high expectations of people and they appreciate it. That’s how you grow and strive to improve.” Many students return repeatedly, expanding their skill set and creating lifelong friends.

KJ adds, “Pottery is more about the process than the product. We like to keep the class size small so that everyone gets individual attention. No two bodies or minds work exactly the same. We use a variety of different teaching techniques and are very

flexible in our approach, encouraging students to ask questions.” Clayworks also offers children and adult parties as well as professional development workshops, which include instruction, supplies, glazing and firing. In addition, they will come to your daycare or school to lead art projects, specially geared to the age of the students and the curriculum. Drop in anytime and choose a piece of ceramic to paint; return in a week to pick up the fired piece. Stop by the shop to purchase a piece of pottery by one of several skilled Alberta artists, including the studio’s instructors as well as past and present students. Clayworks will also order potting wheels, mix glazes and fire pieces in their kilns for other people. For two decades, Elli and her fellow instructors have shared their love of pottery with countless individuals worldwide. Renowned national and international potters are brought in to lead workshops and KJ has travelled to Japan to study. Most important, though, are the connections with students. “Former students will seek Elli out years later just to say hello,” notes K. J. At Clayworks Studio-Link, you are part of a community. SPECIALTY MEAT SHOP

A Taste of Adventure Awaits By Barbara Levorson Photos Sandy Jinsei Photographics

fter a visit to Buffalo Valley Variety Meats, you won’t have to look any further than the end of your fork for adventure. Buffalo Valley prides itself on being Edmonton’s premier supplier of buffalo and exotic meats. For the past ten years, owner Blaine Verbeek has steadily expanded his product line to include exotic meats from around the world. “Originally the store focussed exclusively on buffalo,” explains Verbeek. “But soon after, we expanded to elk, wild boar, then other wild game such as kangaroo and

ostrich.” Since then, the product line has increasingly diversified and Buffalo Valley currently sources 15 to 20 different exotic meats. Customers can find alligator, crocodile, frog legs, alpaca, rabbit and can special order python, turtle, musk ox and even camel. “Exotic meats are more flavourful naturally,” says Verbeek. “Some, like kangaroo, have a stronger taste like deer meat, but alligator, for example, is a very light coloured meat and tastes like a mix between pork and seafood.” Buffalo Valley can also source game birds such

as quail, guinea hen and pheasant. They also regularly stock a wide variety of seafood such as wild arctic char shipped directly from Nunavut, wild Coho salmon, tuna and bassa fish, plus Icelandic cod and haddock, which arrives fresh, not frozen. “Any seafood in the ocean, I can order,” says Verbeek. In addition, Verbeek sources buffalo, which is hormone, steroid and antibiotic free. Buffalo is very high in protein and substantially leaner than beef. As a result, it is lower in cholesterol, and higher in iron. “Buffalo, in particular, is popular among

body builders, personal trainers, and anyone health conscious,” says Verbeek. Buffalo is available in all cuts such as steaks, roasts, sausage, ground and premade patties. “All of my products are 100 per cent gluten free as well, even the barbeque sauce,” says Verbeek. He finds there is significant demand for gluten free options with more health conscious consumers and allergies. If you are unsure about trying exotic meats, Verbeek offers the following advice, “Be open minded. Game and exotic meats more flavourful and healthier than grain fed animals. We provide instructions on how to best prepare these meats, just don’t over-cook it – they tend to be more temperature sensitive.” All the buffalo, elk and wild boar Verbeek sells comes from local farms. Because

these animals are free-range and grass fed rather than grain fed, the end product is leaner, healthier and more flavourful. “A grain fed diet adds fat to the meat,” explains Verbeek. He also finds his customers want to know the source of the animals, that they are naturally raised. “It is very important to my customers to support local growers. They feel more secure in the product when I purchase directly from a farm. It is more ecologically friendly as well, by reducing travel and transportation.” Verbeek adds, “I support local farmers and suppliers because these animals are free range and healthy. This results in a healthier, tastier product on your plate.” Buffalo Valley Variety Meats Inc. #176, 4211 106 St, Whitemud Crossing Edmonton 780.438.9202 www.buffalovalley.ca

Make Vacation Packing Easy By Jenaye Lewis Photos KTB Photography

oing away on vacation is fun; packing for the trip often isn’t. Add in the fact that airline companies are becoming more strict with their luggage regulations — namely limiting the size, weight and amount of bags per person - all things considered,

packing is a recipe for some pre-vacation stress! However, an intimate swimwear and clothing boutique in Sherwood Park doesn’t feel this has to be the case. When choosing stock, the staff at Style Lounge Apparel asks: “How can we

help women pack lighter and smarter, while still ensuring they feel incredibly comfortable and look effortlessly chic?” With this query in mind, owner Lynne Taylor-Ryan has tailored their stock to include pieces that are multifunctional, customizable and travel well. Indeed,

Style Lounge Apparel is a savvy shopper (and packers!) wonderland. Two of the shop’s most popular clothing brands are Nikki Babie and Sympli, both of which are Canadian-made and designed. Many Nikki Babie pieces are made from bamboo-rayon, and, despite their delicate feel, these pieces are machine washable and suitcase friendly. One of the most versatile Nikki Babie pieces is the Jupe de Vie, which can be worn as a skirt of varying lengths, a strapless dress or even as a draping top. Similarly, Sympli offers the Skess, a multifunctional piece made from a highquality jersey material that never wrinkles, pills or fades, making it ideal for travel. Organized packers will never have to worry about creases, and those who toss everything in and hope for the best can pull their Sympli clothing out and rely on it looking smooth and new! The Skess can be worn as a maxi-skirt, a strapless dress, an off-the-shoulder top and a poncho. You can

wear this piece numerous times as a top, bottom or full outfit throughout your trip and then toss it on as a poncho for those chillier flights home! Style Lounge Apparel will be launching the Sympli Fall 2015 line at the beginning of September, which features heavier knits for our colder climate. As for swimwear, tankini tops have been one of the store’s most popular items since they can be worn both in the pool and as a regular tank top — just throw on a pair of shorts or a skirt and you’re set! The shop carries high-quality brands such as Miraclesuit, Magicsuit, Caribbean Joe, Jag, Penbrooke and Tara Grinna in sizes 8 - 24W. Just in time for summer, Style Lounge Apparel also recently brought back one of their favourite brands: Wallaroo hats and visors. These hats are not only stylish and perfect for days on the golf course, gardening or out on a walk, they also pack easily by rolling or scrunching. Most importantly, Wallaroo hats are one of

TATTOO REMOVAL

NO NEED for Regrets By Brook Thalgott  Photos Ply Photography

E

ver since people started getting tattoos, there have been regrets about what they chose to ink. These days, there’s no need to look down and lament at what you see. Ben Alway, business owner and tattoo lover, sees it all the time. “More and more people are getting tattoos, and many started when they were quite young,” says Ben. “However, what you thought was cool at 19, may not be so cool at 40.” That’s where Ben’s business, Edmonton’s Second Skin Tattoo Removal, can help. Ben can erase whatever you thought you’d love forever, but don’t anymore. More than seven years ago, Ben became a laser technician and started Second Skin Tattoo Removal. Prior to laser technology, tattoos could only be covered with another tattoo – which unfortunately usually looks like it’s covering something else – surgically removed or simply left as is. Today, Ben can help remove a tattoo entirely, or fade an existing tattoo so the area can be covered with something better. “Things have changed so much in the last 25 years,” Ben says. “Tattoos are now mainstream and the techniques and artistry has have improved greatly. With this evolution, there is a need to help people deal with art they’re not happy with anymore.” The process for fading or removal is a simple one. If you’re looking to fade a tattoo in order to cover it with something else, you’re looking at one to four treatments, spaced about eight weeks apart to allow the area to heal.

122

FineLifestyles

“The process is straightforward. I use a laser that targets the ink, specifically the colour. Different lasers will be more effective on different colours. The laser quickly heats ink and breaks it down into tiny fragments. Your body will trigger an immune response and the ink will slowly fade between treatments,” says Ben. If you’re looking for complete removal, it simply means more treatments until the tattoo is gone. The number of treatments for fading or removal also depends on the age of the tattoo, the ink and needle used, the location and your own skin. “Every tattoo I deal with is different,” says Ben. “But, typically, the older the tattoo, the easier it is to remove. The same is true for thin lines and light shading. Hard lines and solid colours take longer. Basically, the more ink there is, the longer it can take.” And, like getting a tattoo, it’s not

a pain-free experience. Fortunately, Ben has ways to make the experience more comfortable, and each treatment doesn’t take long. One treatment can be range from 30 seconds to 15 minutes, with an average of about two to five minutes. Let Second Skin Tattoo Removal help you get rid of ink you no longer want. HEALING, LEARNING AND FREEDOM

from the Deadly Grip of Addiction By Melanie Furlong Photos Alicia Leclercq

ddicts and their families should never give up on the struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Ardyth Wilson, an alcoholic in recovery, knows this from personal experience. She got sober 30 years ago, but lost her brother, Dwight, to his addictions at a young age. This was one of the catalysts that drove Wilson to open the Leipzig Serenity Retreat seven years ago in Wilkie, SK., making it the only privately run addictions centre in the province. The beautiful retreat, located in an 88-year-old former convent, provides a warm, welcoming environment for addicts in a non-institutional setting. All the staff at Leipzig Serenity Retreat are

either in recovery themselves or have family members who are. Their fiveweek program is based on the 12 step philosophical ideas used by more than 350 organizations. Ms. Wilson states, “Many centres only do steps one to three or one to five, but we do all 12 of the steps here.” Working on her own, it took Wilson almost one year to do the 12 Steps and it was a very painful process. At Leipzig Serenity Retreat, they explore all the steps in five weeks. “Years ago, you could find someone in AA who would help you go through the steps,” she says. “It appears to be harder for people to give the kind of time you need to get clean and sober nowadays. When they come here

and learn the steps, they’re more apt to continue with their recovery and build a healthy support network.” Also offered is one-on-one counselling, small group counselling, meditation sessions and an emotional wellness program designed at Leipzig Serenity Retreat. The emotional wellness classes explore self-esteem issues, negative core beliefs and biased expectations. This exploration helps clients redefine and examine their own morals, values and beliefs. Ms. Wilson attributes their high rate of success to the intimate relaxed setting and high counsellor-client ratio. The retreat can accommodate up to a

maximum of 18 clients at one time and has three full-time counsellors on staff as well as peer support workers. Last year, 127 clients 18 years old and up took part in their programs. A client named Sam says, “I could not have asked for a better serenity retreat. The grounds are beautiful and huge and the staff is amazing and very helpful. My five weeks went by so fast and the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions helped me through it. I appreciate all that you have done for me!” While it’s heartbreaking to see the damage already done to young addicts, Wilson is adamant they are not without

hope. “Watching people change is the most fulfilling part of our jobs,” she says. Anyone who requests a tour of the facility is welcome and staff members are happy to answer questions from addicts or their families about the program. If you or anyone you know could benefit from the services at Leipzig Serenity Retreat, give them a call. This special place is changing lives for the better. usy lifestyles, large portions and heavily processed foods are a key factor in obesity, which has devastating health effects. Ethemba Health and Image Centres has developed a weight loss program under the guidance of health coach Shannon Hatfield and Dr. Richard Hatfield to help combat this growing epidemic. Best described as a non-diet, the program encourages lifestyles shifts for sustainable weight loss. As a young child, Shannon developed a passion for healthy food from spending weekends on her grandfather’s farm. Her Psychology and Holistic Nutrition education combined with her love of natural foods is something she shares with her clients in a program she developed to address various aspects of obesity. “Many of us associate food with love and good times spent sharing meals. Eating nutritious, whole, real food is life changing,” says Shannon, Once you get a taste of healthy living and how your skin, digestion, energy levels and even your moods improve dramatically, you will do whatever it takes to stay on track,” she says. Shannon lost her father to heart failure and Diabetic complications due to obesity. As a result she works tirelessly to help give others a second chance at good health. Eating clean, nutritious foods and staying active are the guiding principles Shannon and her family use to lead their lives. Jina, a personal trainer, understood the value of exercise but she and her husband were struggling with their weight and health. As the parents of a young child, they knew that they needed to get back on track. After working with Shannon for just three months, the couple saw stunning results — nearly 60 lost lbs. combined. “Shannon was such a big motivator in our weight loss journey. It’s indescribable and incredibly rewarding to know the benefits go far beyond my client, reaching their entire family, inner and outer circle,” says Shannon, “We may not all get a second chance, but if we’re lucky enough to get one, let’s run with it.”

Ethemba is an African word meaning trust, faith and to believe. At the clinic, Shannon and Dr. Hatfield truly believe in their clients. In fact, studies show weight loss regimes are far more effective with the right support system.

Ancient Teachings for Modern Healing By Brandi Parnell  Photos Jonathan Lima Giroux

healed on the mat,” said Edie Cassady, owner of Yoga Wellness. More than 25 years ago, riddled with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Edie tried various healing modalities to combat her pain and eventually found herself on the mat. While her physical agony and arthritic symptoms were not only eliminated, both her physiological and psychological wellbeing radically improved as well. The healing experience that readily changed her life was profound and the driving force that led her to study the therapeutic aspects of yoga and eventually share it with others. A yoga therapist considers the whole body, honors the integrity of ancient yoga teachings and makes them relevant and practical today – a modality for whole body wellness. The benefits of yoga therapy are plentiful, most importantly it is a practice tailored to the individuals needs and goals. For example, a one-on-one practice for low back pain not only includes the physical aspects of healing but also the physiological and psychological symptoms as well. Personal transformation includes all levels of the being, physical, physiological and psychological. A yoga therapist creates an all encompassing practice for all levels of healing.

how much my self-esteem has improved. I sleep better and I feel accepted.” When we pause our western way of thinking, become aware of both body and mind in our practice, a transformation happens.
